Sottopelle

Bringing to light what today lies buried beneath modern habits and consumption — this is the great challenge that the trabocchi (traditional fishing structures) are currently facing. In Per qualcuno può essere lo spazio, Ettore Sottsass writes: “There is a heavy and fibrous matter to be leavened: that’s the problem. The problem is to give it form, as they say, to give it meaning, to lift it from below, raise it into the air, and give it a stunning and unforeseen movement. This is art.” Starting from these constructions that seem to have been there since time immemorial — and that we often take for granted — the research delves into the specific elements that make them up. Sottopelle is the leaven that attempts to give shape to a process that no longer exists in the local collective memory. The project seeks to analyze the unpredictable graphic and material qualities of the components that form the trabucco, outlining a possible path for its reconstruction.
